Beneath the Bruises
by: Jen Tan
True love requires sacrifice.
Everyone has a story to tell about love—some heartwarming and inspiring, others tough and filled with fear. This is how my best friend described her past experience with love, a journey that proved traumatic.
My friend
I've known Mia since 2016, when we met during our kids' audition for the musical play "Matilda" in the Philippines. We bonded instantly, sharing our experiences as moms with kids in the performing arts. Mia, a talented writer, former theatre actress, and singer in the band 'Caramel Park,' quickly became a dear friend.
One day, Mia opened up to me, revealing the harrowing chapters of her past relationship. Before her marriage, she was in an abusive relationship with a charismatic young man she believed to be her soulmate. What seemed like a match made in heaven turned into dark and tough times, marked by an abusive partner that almost cost her life.
Numbers don't lie
According to Worldbank.org's gender data, 30% of women globally have faced sexual and physical violence from an intimate partner—a staggering 736 million women. Shockingly, 26% of them are children aged 15 and above. The pandemic in 2021 saw a rise in abuses against women, reaching 45%, according to UNWomen.org.
Reflecting on Mia's Journey
As I looked at the big numbers, it struck me with a deep sense of surprise and sadness to realize that my friend's story had become a disheartening part of this alarming reality. Mia, in her silent agony, concealed the torment, hiding the story behind the bruises from those closest to her—loved ones, friends, and even the authorities. She fought a solitary battle, camouflaging her wounds beneath layers of makeup foundation, a poignant metaphor for the hidden scars she carried.
Moving on
Mia has flourished, crafting a loving family and dedicating herself to being a full-time writer, creating beautiful tales of love, faith, and family. Despite the distance between us in Canada, I can't wait for the day we reunite. It will be a joyous and memorable moment, a chance to embrace and honor her strength and bravery as she triumphs over the shadows of her past.
